Task: Genuinely complement every single person you come in contact with.
"My goodness! Did you do something to your hair? It looks fabulous!"
"Hey tiger, have you been working out?"
"Those earrings really bring out your eyes!"
Ah, compliments. We all love receiving them. Hearing one good thing can really turn around your day for the better. Today, my prime targets were the people in my Chem class. Since I haven't spoken to many of them in the past, it was much easier to start getting to know them using my compliment as an icebreaker. I started it off by telling my professor that I liked her earrings. But I think her expression said it all, her nose scrunched up and she squinted her eyes... she thought that I was being a kiss-up. "Thanks", she said not changing her expression. But no worries, that didn't stop me. I gave everyone compliments in my class, and I didn't make it obvious that I was doing it either. I just kind of let it slip into conversation and out of a class of 12, here was what I got as a response:
7 polite thank you's
4 reciprocated compliments
1 raised eyebrow and "what do you want?"
That last one was pretty funny since it was an older lady, she seemed very suspicious as to why I complimented her out-of-the-blue. Understandable. And, I think it was cool that I got a few compliments out of it too! Hey, like I said, we all like getting them! Another interesting thing I found while doing this is that guys take compliments as flirting, which was not what I was going for at all! Oops, sorry gentlemen for giving off the wrong signal. I'll definitely work on that in the future...
